The music video for Chike and Mohbad’s “Egwu,” which had been making waves since its release, recently made another historic achievement after it garnered over a million streams on YouTube in just 24 hours.
The extremely smashing video, which was released by Chike on February 28, 2024, in honor of the unbridled spirit of the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, caused an explosion in the online space and also made the singer’s legacy remain fresh in the hearts of many Nigerians.
The video, which was directed by a female director, Director Pink, had an incredible touch of creativity blended with aesthetic features that are capable of spellbinding the viewer.
Indeed, a man can die, but his legacy never dies. That was outright what the chief of Brother Records, Chike, had done in the music video to immortalize his counterpart’s soul, which had, no doubt, etched an unerasable memory in the storied line of history in the Nigerian music industry.
“Egwu” by Chike and Mohbad, shortly after its release, was one of the top 3 songs that topped the charts in Nigeria alongside “IDK” by Wizkid feat. Zlatan and “Bust Down” by Zlatan feat. Asake, especially on Apple Music’s Nigerian Top 100 chart. The song currently maintains a competing No. 8 on the chart, even as the music video broke ground for the duo after its streams skyrocketed to 7.3 million views on YouTube in just 3 weeks of its release.
“Egwu” by the young star Chike and the late Mohbad served as a ticket for the duo to plunge into the official Nigeria Top 100 songs on multiple charts, earning them a plaque on TurnTable and positioning them for a more seamless transition into musical beasts.
The hit song had reportedly competed closely with Kizz Daniel’s “Twe Twe” remix featuring Afrobeat King David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, on the TurnTable Chart, which is known for bringing the best-performing artists and songs weekly. Chike recently received a plaque from the Turntable chart and took a picture with it, showing his reputable No. 1 ranking on the Top 100 Nigeria chart.
It is, however, unfortunate that Mohbad is not here to witness the sheening boom at this pivotal point in his career. It can be recalled that the singer reportedly died in Lagos, at the age of 27, on September 12, 2023, after a brief illness whose root cannot be traced which led to various controversies that surround his death to date.
He gained global recognition after his death when some of his hit songs “Ponmo,” “Peace,” “Beast and Peace,” “Sorry,” “Feel Good,” and “KPK (Ko Por Ke)” began to top various charts on Apple Music, Spotify and other digital streaming platforms and the outburst of fans who sought justice for his alleged gruesome murder.
Till he died, he was a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter from Lagos. He was formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records and left the label in 2022.
