The Season 9 of the Nigerian Idol singing competition commenced on Sunday, April 21, 2024, with vocal powerhouse, Omawumi announced as one of the judges.
This marked a significant moment in the history of the Nigerian Idol show and the music career of the singer who is also a product of the show.
With the commencement of the 2024 edition at about 7:00pm last Sunday, Omawumi was announced alongside two other talented and well-known Nigerian singers, Ric Hassani and 9ice as judges.
Recall that the singer, Omawumi who is originally known as Omawumi Megbele, first came into the limelight after she featured on the show 17 years ago.
Following her participation, the singer experienced a significant progression in her musical career and released a number of hit songs which saw her become one of the female artists to reckon with in the industry about a decade ago.
Omawumi however, eventually began to witness a dwindling career and has since then, had difficulty regaining her place despite the efforts to remain relevant in the industry.
Late last year, the ‘Bottom Belle’ singer reportedly made a comeback with her EP, ‘More’, featuring the likes of Yemi Alade, Timi Dakolo, and Cobhams. Unfortunately, that body of work couldn’t relaunch her career to earn her a place in the global success of Nigerian music.
This further sparked more uncertainties regarding the cause of her fall from grass to grace despite being loved by many during her heydays.
Omawumi’s name still resonates amongst contemporary music lovers especially in the Nigerian music scene where some contemporary singers and old cats are currently dominating the world stage.
She undoubtedly remains one talented superstar but whose name is visibly missing on the list of Nigerian creatives taking the world by storm in this era.
Perhaps, it’s not for nothing that her teeming fans were excited when she was announced as one of the judges of season seven of Nigerian Idol.
Omawumi is a gifted Nigerian singer and songwriter who who has to her credit, four albums and one EP. She has cemented her position as one of Nigeria’s most euphonious voices, skillfully conveying a variety of emotions with her limitless vocal talent.
Her journey to fame began after she emerged the runner-up in the 2007 edition of the West African Idol competition. During her heydays, Omawumi was the toast of many music enthusiasts in Nigeria and beyond. Her debut single “In The Music” which she released in 2008 and her debut album,“Wonder woman” in 2009, made Omawumi a formidable force in the country’s music scene.
The album laid the groundwork for her critically acclaimed sophomore album “Lasso of Truth ” which debuted on the 10th of April 2013. She has also released two more albums; “In her Feelings” and “Love Deep High Life” which have received critical acclaim. But, while she’s missing in action, Omawumi is one of the vocal powerhouses in the Nigerian music industry that still has more to offer to the world.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Nigerian Idol features 50 contestants who will be set to the tasks to prove that they have got the musical talent to make it in one of the world’s fastest-growing and most competitive music industries. The winner of the 2024 Nigerian Idol stands a chance to win N30million and more.
