Elton John faces one of the saddest realities of his life as he loses his eyesight to infection. The “Am Still Standing” crooner attended the premiere of ‘The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical’ in London on Sunday and revealed that he enjoyed listening to the performance even though he could not see anything because he lost sight.
He said “As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it,”
Speaking to the audience in the theatre, the award-winning singer and pianist extended his gratitude to his spouse, David Furnish, for all the support he had received during the trying period.
“To my husband, who has been my rock because I have not been able to come to many of the previews. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight,” he added.
Elton John disclosed to his fans in September that was having a severe sight complication, orchestrated by eye infections; which has limited his vision in one eye. Currently, both eyes have been affected as he can barely see anything again, even though he assured that he is gradually recovering.
In an Instagram post he made, John wrote, “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
The 77-year-old musical doyen also revealed that the sight issue has rendered him handicapped in making new music. He disclosed this to Good Morning America in an interview.
He said “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment. Going into the studio and recording, I don’t know.”
Elton John has clinched over five Grammy Awards and five Brit Awards; which include the Outstanding Contribution to Music; two Academy Awards, and two Golden Globes. Besides the aforementioned, he also garnered the Tony Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Disney Legends Award, and the Kennedy Center Honour.
