Nigerian singer and owner of Marlian Records label, Azeez Adeshina Fashola professionally known as Naira Marley has finally spoken out after a magistrate court in Yaba acquitted him alongside Sam Larry and Prime Boy over their alleged involvement in Mohbad’s death.
The Marlian president and his associate Sam Larry and Prime Boy were on Tuesday exonerated of all the allegations surrounding their involvement in the tragic passing of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known professionally as MohBad who died in Lagos on 12th September 2023 at the age of 27.
The court verdict comes 18 months after the sudden death of MohBad which sparked controversy all over the country. MohBad was a former signee of the Marlian record label owned by Naira Marley.
His death came shortly after a video surfaced on the internet suggesting that the Marlian president and his associates were bullying him due to a fallout that transpired among them.
Following several calls and cries for justice, Marley and Larry were arrested in October 2023 over alleged involvement in Mohbad’s death and were granted bail a few days later as police continued with investigations.
During this period, Naira Marley and his associates appeared to be the prime suspects in Mohbad’s death. They were pointed accusing fingers and called several names. However, Naira Marley has never spoken in public to claim his innocence regarding the allegation.
In a significant turn of events, the Magistrate Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos state on Tuesday acquitted Naira Marley and his associates. The court vehemently ruled that they had no involvement in the death of singer Mohbad.
Reacting to his victory, Naira Marley took to his X handle to express his gratitude (to Allah) for being vindicated at last. He also registered his grievances on those who knew the truth but chose to keep quiet and allow him to suffer what he allegedly knew nothing about.
He wrote “I never thought silence could be so loud. I never thought someone I called my brother, someone I protected, would leave this world with my name in his shadow. I have carried this weight, this pain, this shame that was never mine to bear”.
He admitted to having had a fallout with Mohbad but remarked that he made peace with him long before his tragic passing unto glory.
“We, as Marlians, were not perfect. We had to grow, we had to adapt. Mistakes were made, but they were business-never war. I made peace with Mohbad. We understood each other beyond the noise, beyond the misunderstandings. And you know this,” he continued.
Referring to those that knew all along that he was innocent but kept mute, he said “yet when he took his last breath in you alls arms, you looked at the world and pointed at me. You let them tear me apart. You let them call me a killer while you sat there, knowing the truth”.
Now you tell the story? I welcomed you all into my home. I gave you my trust. And yet, my brother is gone, still not buried, and that is your fault. Telling the truth from the beginning would have given him the rest he deserves” He added.
Mohbad’s father denies knowing the nurse involved in Mohbad’s death
In another development, Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi recently granted an interview on the With Chude podcast where she made some revelations regarding the late singer’s death. She alleged that a particular nurse administered an injection to Mohbad which is suspected to have to his death.
Wunmi also said that Mr Aloba, Mohbad’s father was present the night her husband passed away and even met the nurse who administered the injection on the scene but allowed her to go scot-free.
Wunmi said, “I knew that there was a nurse involved in this case. Mohbad reacted to an injection, and the night he died, when my father-in-law came to the house, the nurse explained everything to him. My husband’s manager actually wanted to have the nurse arrested that night, but my father-in-law said no, that we should let her go because he had no business with her. Many people even begged my father-in-law not to bury my husband that day, but he insisted on burying him and did it anyway. I found out online. Even on the day of the burial, they wanted to take our son Liam from me.”
Responding to the allegation made by Mohbad’s widow, Mr Aloba in a live session on February 26, 2025, refuted her claims. He said he has never met the nurse nor had any interaction with her.
“I don’t know any nurse, and I never saw her. I have never set my eyes on her, and we never spoke. If I ever saw the nurse, it was online and never in person. Again, I have never conversed with the nurse. All the times I have narrated the story of what happened to my son, did I ever mention any nurse? I didn’t see a nurse there,” he declared.
