The forum of the South East Academic Doctors (Fosad) has unequivocally condemned the alleged sexual harassment of a female student of the University of Nigeria Nnsukka by her lecturer.
Recall that a video went viral on Tuesday morning showing an average-aged man almost completely undressed caught in a camera while attempting to harass his female student probably in exchange for scores.
The man who was later identified as Mr Mfonobong David Udoudom, was said to have been consistently perpetrating that ugly act, according to the group of people who caught him pant-down, as it was heard of one of them saying “He has been doing it and we decided to trap him today”.
The university of Nigeria Nnsukka immediately approved his indefinite suspension while thorough investigations has been initiated.
According to a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Dr Okwun Omeaku, “the indefinite suspension is with immediate effect pending the outcome of a disciplinary panel constituted by the University to investigate the incident.”
The management maintained that the University of Nigeria has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct involving “our staff and students.” It added that “UNN is among the few universities in the country that has a Sexual Harassment Policy, which guides the relationship between our staff and students in particular and among our male and female staff.”
Meanwhile, in a statement released on Tuesday evening, the Forum of South East Academic Doctors said the incident underscores the urgent need for universities and educational institutions to implement strict policies and procedures to prevent and address sexual harassment.
FOSAD in the statement signed by its Secretary General, Dr Uzor Ngoladi, called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter while urging the university management to take swift action to ensure that justice is served and that measures are put in place to protect students from such misconduct in the future.
It said, “The Forum of South East Academic Doctors unequivocally condemns any form of sexual harassment, particularly within academic settings. Educational institutions must be safe spaces where students can learn and grow without fear of intimidation, exploitation, or abuse.
“We stand in solidarity with the alleged victim and her family and call on the University of Nigeria Nsukka to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this incident.”
It also encouraged other academic institutions to review their policies on sexual harassment, ensuring that they have clear guidelines and support systems for victims.
“It’s crucial that universities foster environments where students feel empowered to report incidents without fear of retaliation,” it said.
The forum emphasized the need to create a culture of respect and accountability within academic environments.
It said, “This includes ongoing education and training for faculty and staff on issues of sexual harassment, as well as transparent procedures for addressing complaints.
“We must work together to create a safe and respectful educational landscape. We encourage everyone – students, faculty, and administration – to stand against sexual harassment in all its forms and to advocate for a supportive and inclusive academic community.”
The Forum of South East Academic Doctors says it is committed to supporting the University of Nigeria Nsukka in its investigation and in advocating for the rights and safety of all students.
It said, “The forum will continue to monitor the situation closely and offer assistance where needed.
“The Forum of South East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting academic excellence, ethical conduct, and social responsibility in educational institutions across South East Nigeria.
“The forum advocates for the rights and well-being of students and supports the academic community in creating a safe and inclusive environment.”
